I'm playing my movies through Windows Media Center on my xbox 360 which doesn't really offer any software control over audio but I get some control through a stereo system which the audio is output. This would be fine if we all lived in detached houses 10m from everyone else but obviously, I need to think about the neighbors. Note that this tip works on Windows 7 and above systems, including Windows 10. To turn it off if you find the sound volume is now too loud, go to the same place and uncheck the Loudness option. Loudness option to boost the sound volume. By setting each app to have a volume of 1, I can then use the master volume to adjust between 'very quiet' and 'loud'. In the Speakers properties window, go to Enhancements, and check Loudness Equalization option. It seems to be more and more that movies require you to have your volume set extremely high if you want to hear voice, but when it comes to music and sound effects, the volume for these things are already two or three times louder than the dialogue!
